About This Event
Ever wondered how laws are made—and what it takes to make a difference in your community? The Curve’s Youth in Government program gives middle and high school students the opportunity to explore how government works, develop their leadership skills, and experience democracy in action. During a four-week Friday workshop series, students will learn about the structure and functions of state government, explore current issues, and write their own mock legislation. They’ll practice critical thinking, persuasive writing, public speaking, and civil debate as they prepare to step into the roles of real government leaders.
The experience culminates in the statewide Tennessee YMCA Youth in Government program in Nashville, where students from across Tennessee gather to take on the roles of elected officials and other government professionals. Participants debate bills, work in committees, and experience the legislative process firsthand. High school students attend a full weekend conference, with additional opportunities to explore roles in the judicial branch, executive branch, lobbying, and press corps.
Whether students are passionate about current events, interested in law or politics, or simply curious about how decisions are made, Youth in Government offers an engaging opportunity to build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and discover the power of civic participation. Students don’t just learn about government—they get to experience it firsthand!
High School YIG will meet 4 Fridays for class time to prepare - March 5, 12, April 2, 9.
YIG Conference Info: Students will attend the YIG weekend in Nashville April 15-18. Events run Thursday late afternoon through Sunday at noon. Students will need to be prepared to attend the entire weekend. Parent chaperones will be needed as well. YIG charges a delegate fee per student (typically $250). Students can drive in each day or hotel rooms are available at a discounted rate through YIG.
